在东京经营豆腐店的有马义男（桥爪功 饰），他可爱的孙女鞠子失踪后一直下落不明。这一天警方打来电话，称在某公园垃圾桶内发现一截女性的断臂，旁边还有鞠子的相关证件。不久有人神秘人变声后致电警方，宣称断臂非鞠子本人，鞠子已被埋在另外的地方。沉寂多年的自由记者前畑滋子（中谷美纪 饰）偶然听说鞠子的案件，她通过相熟的总编联系上了断臂的发现人——一起灭门惨案的幸存者冢田真一（滨田龙臣 饰）。在走访有马时，疑似犯罪真凶接连给这个身心饱受创伤的老人打来电话。而在这一过程中，类似的杀人案接连发生。滋子不断追查，渐渐逼近事实真相…… 本片根据宫部美雪的同名原著改编。。The film is a dramatic re-enactment of real-life events that took place in 1968 in the small village of San Miguel Canoa in Puebla, México.
